The Nanaimo Arts Council (NAC) has announced the deadline for the annual Islands Short Fiction Contest: all submissions must be delivered to the NAC (Nanaimo North Town Centre, 4750 Rutherford Rd., Nanaimo) or emailed to <admin@nanaimoartscouncil.ca> by Apr. 5 at 9 p.m.
The contest is sponsored by the NAC and the Vancouver Island University Creative Writing department and is open to all residents of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Submissions will be judged by VIU Fiction instructor Robert J. Wiersema in three categories—Adult (19+), Youth (13–18), and Junior (12 and under). Prizes will be awarded in each category, and the winner of the adult category will be awarded a bursary to study a Creative Writing course at VIU.
Entries must be 2000 words or less and should be accompanied by a cover page outlining word count and author information. All submissions must be previously unpublished. Submissions from previous NAC short fiction contests are not eligible for resubmission. Entrance fees are $20 for adults and $15 for youth and junior submissions. Everyone is welcome to send multiple entries, as long as each submission is accompanied by separate forms and fees.
