Annual Urban Issues Film Festival

The theme for the seventh annual Urban Issues Film Festival, which takes place on Friday Nov. 9, is “Nature of the City and Nature in the City.” Sponsored by the VIU Geography department and other local organizations, the event will include long films, such as We Are Not Ghosts, which tells the story about the regeneration of Detroit by artists and community members; short films on the subject of urban agriculture, and a speech from former city council member and community activist Bill Holdom. The festival will take place from 3–9:30 p.m. in bldg. 356, rms. 109 and 111. Admission is free, and food and popcorn will be provided. Vancouver Island Short Film Festival: Fundraiser

Tickets for the James Bond-themed Vancouver Island Short Film Festival (VISFF) fundraiser are now on sale. The second annual fundraiser will raise money for artist fees, given to the filmmakers who are accepted into the festival. The event will take place Thursday Nov. 8, from 7–11 p.m. at The Firehouse Grill, 7 Victoria Rd., Nanaimo. Tickets, available at The Firehouse Grill, Lucid, The Elephant Room, and the Nanaimo Arts Council, cost $20 and include a sushi appetizer, a drink, as well as entertainment by DJ All Good. The event is semi-formal and Bond-dress is optional.
